Grants will be awarded to reimburse departments for 1) 2017 individual member certification dues/fees, 2) Travel costs to attend training, and/or 3) Health/Wellness programs. Grants up to $5,000 will be awarded based on financial need and are intended to encourage all departments to participate in certification, training and health/wellness programs to prevent emergency responder deaths and injuries. Departments will need to apply for the grant, expend the funds and then send in copies of receipts and proof of training attendance in order to receive the grant funds. Who is eligible: •All-volunteer or mostly-volunteer fire departments and non-profit EMS organizations that serve apopulation of 100,000 or less and are legally organized in Texas. What is eligible: • Part I – 2017 annual individual certification or re-certification fees for SFFMA (NOT department dues), TCFP or DSHS. • Part II – Student course materials and travel expenses (up to $150 per day per person) for training that is part of a certification program during calendar year 2017 (travel expenses include travel to/from, meals/tips, hotel/dorm). • Part III – Cost for equipment (up to $2,500) and/or professionals to develop an in-house Health & Wellness Program. How it works: • Departments can apply for Part I, Part II, and/or Part III. • Departments should apply for assistance first (completed grant application and W-9) by 12/31/16. • Applications will be reviewed and notice will be sent to those awarded a grant by 1/31/17. • Departments will be responsible for sending in paid receipts and course completion certificates by 12/1/17 in order to receive reimbursement. The program provides reimbursement grants for Texas firefighters to obtain workers compensation, death and disability insurance from private insurance companies. Each year more than 400 fire departments and 11,000 firefighters take advantage of the grant offering.
Who is eligible... Any chartered, non-profit volunteer or part-paid/volunteer fire department is eligible, provided the number of paid members is 20 or less. All qualified departments must participate in a firefighter certification program administered under Section 419.071 of the Texas Government Code (Texas Commission on Fire Protection), or by the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshal’s Association of Texas (SFFMA), or by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). What is eligible... Any combination of compensation insurance for firefighters (Workers' Compensation, Death, and/or Disability Insurance) is eligible. The insurance coverage must include a workers' compensation or similar benefit, and a death benefit. Departments may enter into agreements with cities or counties in order to qualify for coverage and/or special premiums. How much will it pay... The program will reimburse 100% of the actual cost of eligible insurance coverage, up to a maximum of $112.00 per fire department member covered in the calendar year 2015. How to apply... Funds awarded through the Firefighter Safety & Training Grant Program will enable these departments to participate in a certification program and training to support critical workplace safety training.
Fifty-eight volunteer fire departments applied for the grant and the 39 grantees were selected based on their financial needs and the impact the funds would have in their safety and training efforts. VFIS of Texas and Texas Mutual Insurance Company partnered with the State Firemen’s & Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas (SFFMA) to manage the application process and select the grant recipients. “We are very fortunate and thankful to VFIS of Texas and Texas Mutual for this grant, which will help us pay our 2014 annual membership dues to SFFMA,” said Jack K. Rymer, Fire Chief of Possum Kingdom West Side VFD. “This is a very important association that greatly benefits volunteer fire departments such as ours by providing certified training courses and other training programs to make our department safer and more professional.
